Added Sugars: How to Recognise Them

Distinguish free sugars from those naturally present and learn to locate them in ingredients.

Comparación entre alimentos con azúcares añadidos y fruta fresca

Free sugars include those added by manufacturers or at home and those present in honey, syrups, and juices. They are not equivalent to whole fruit.

Common names

Sugar, glucose syrup or fructose syrup, dextrose, honey, syrups, and juice concentrates can provide free sugars. Their position in the list indicates their relative weight.

Reduce without becoming obsessed

  • Drink water as your regular beverage.
  • Choose natural yogurt and add fruit if you want sweetness.
  • Gradually reduce the sugar in coffee, infusions, and recipes.
  • Reserve sweets and sugary drinks for occasional consumption.
