How to Reduce Salt Without Losing Flavour

Cooking techniques, herbs, spices, and acidity to reduce reliance on salt without making dishes bland.

Hierbas aromáticas, especias y limón como alternativas culinarias a la sal

Most of the salt we consume comes from packaged foods, breads, sausages, cheeses, sauces, and prepared dishes, not just the salt shaker.

Gain Flavor in Other Ways

  • Caramelize, toast, or grill to create aromas.
  • Use garlic, onion, herbs, spices, and pepper.
  • Add lemon, vinegar, or tomatoes for acidity.
  • Reduce gradually: the palate adapts.

Compare Equivalent Products

Check the salt content per 100g on the label and compare within the same category. For canned goods and legumes, draining and rinsing can reduce some of the surface salt.

The WHO recommends less than 5g of salt per day for adults. Some people may need individualized recommendations.
