Let’s get cooking

Method

  1. Wash the apples and remove the cores without cutting through the base. Make a shallow cut around the skin to reduce the chance of splitting during baking.

  2. Sit them securely in a small heatproof dish and put 5 g of butter into the hollow of each apple.

  3. Without preheating, cook for 25–30 minutes at 175°C. Check with a skewer: it should slide easily into the centre. If still firm, add 3-minute intervals; size and variety affect the timing.

  4. Cool for 5 minutes and serve one per person with its juices. If all four do not fit apart, cook in two batches and allow extra time.
